5 Myths About Black Holes

Black holes are among the most mysterious objects in the universe—and that mystery has led to a whole lot of misunderstandings. Movies, TV shows, and even casual space talk have spread some seriously wild ideas.

Let’s bust 5 common myths about black holes that you’ve probably believed at some point.

Myth #1: Black holes suck everything like giant vacuum cleaners.
Truth: Nope. A black hole doesn’t go around “sucking” things up. If our Sun were replaced by a black hole of the same mass, Earth would still orbit it just fine—no cosmic slurping. You have to get really close to feel its pull.

Myth #2: Black holes are bottomless holes in space.
Truth: Despite the name, a black hole isn’t a hole—it’s an incredibly dense point in space with powerful gravity. It’s more like a super-heavy, invisible object than an empty tunnel.

Myth #3: You’d instantly die if you fell into one.
Truth: Depends on the size. In smaller black holes, yes—you’d be spaghettified (stretched until you're just atoms). But in a supermassive black hole, you might cross the event horizon without even noticing. You’d still die, just more slowly… and mysteriously.

Myth #4: Black holes can destroy the whole universe.
Truth: Not even close. While black holes are powerful, they aren’t on a mission to consume everything. Space is huge, and black holes are just one part of it. They’re not a threat to the universe—or Earth.

Myth #5: Nothing ever escapes a black hole.
Truth: Mostly true—but not entirely. According to Stephen Hawking, black holes slowly emit tiny particles called Hawking radiation. Over an insanely long time, this could cause black holes to evaporate. So, yes—something does escape eventually.
